Museo del Banco Central Pumapungo (Calle Larga e/Arriaga y Huayna Capac, Cuenca) – along with a wing that displays more contemporary artworks at this museum’s street level, its upper level features a variety of ítems that reveal the country’s diverse cultures – from indigenous (Indian) to Afro-Ecuadorian (showing the little-known blacks from Esmeraldas province, who were the descendants of African slaves that were brought into the country by the conquistadors). An unforgettable section shows a display of shrunken heads from the Shuar culture of the southern Oriente region. There’s also an outdoor section which display ruins that were once part of the Inca city of Tomebamba. Free admission. Hours: 8:00 am – 5:30 pm (Tuesday – Saturday).
